What you’ll see

Malacca's old town is on the UNESCO list because of what five centuries of Portuguese, Dutch and British rule left behind: the red Stadthuys, the ruins of St Paul's Church and the A Famosa gate.

Jonker Street is the reason to stay past the afternoon, antique shops, Nyonya kitchens, and the night market on weekend evenings.

We also stop at Cheng Hoon Teng, the oldest functioning Chinese temple in the country, and at the Baba & Nyonya heritage house when it is open.

It is roughly two hours down the highway from Kuala Lumpur, so it works as a long full day, or as an overnight if you want the evening in Jonker.

On the route

  • Dutch Square & the red Stadthuys
  • St Paul's Hill & A Famosa
  • Jonker Street & night market
  • Cheng Hoon Teng temple
  • Nyonya lunch

Good to know

UNESCO listing
Melaka's historic city centre was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2008, together with George Town in Penang.
Jonker night market
The Jonker Street market runs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. Any other day the street is quieter and the shops close earlier.
Walking level
Moderate. The old town is walkable but St Paul's Hill is a short uphill climb on uneven steps.
Drive time
Roughly two hours each way down the North–South Expressway, which makes it a long full day from Kuala Lumpur.
