What you’ll see
Putrajaya is Malaysia's administrative capital, built from scratch around a lake, with wide boulevards, government buildings in a mix of Islamic and modern styles, and a great many bridges.
The stop everyone asks for is Masjid Putra, the Pink Mosque, with its rose-tinted granite dome. Robes are lent at the door and visiting hours work around prayer times.
A Cruise Tasik boat runs along the lake past the Prime Minister's office and the Seri Wawasan bridge, which is the easiest way to take in the scale of the place.
Half a day covers the mosque and the cruise. A full day lets us add the Botanical Garden, the Wetlands and Masjid Tuanku Mizan, the steel mosque.
On the route
- Masjid Putra, the Pink Mosque
- Cruise Tasik lake boat
- Seri Wawasan bridge
- Perdana Putra & Dataran Putra
- Botanical Garden (full day)
Good to know
- Dress code
- Masjid Putra lends robes at the door. Visiting hours work around the five daily prayers, so the timing of the stop moves a little.
- Lake cruise
- Cruise Tasik boats run from the Putrajaya jetty past the Prime Minister's office and under the bridges.
- Shade
- Putrajaya was built with wide open boulevards and there is very little shade. Bring water, a hat and sunscreen.
- Best time
- Late afternoon. The light on the rose granite is best and the heat off the plazas has dropped.
